Adaptations in Bony Fishes

Bony fishes, a category to which the Barred Bichir belongs, exhibit specific adaptations. Unlike cartilaginous fishes, they possess a swim bladder—a gas-filled internal chamber. This organ plays a crucial role in helping the fish regulate their buoyancy, controlling their position within the water column. In the case of the Barred Bichir, the swim bladder also serves a dual purpose, functioning as a type of lung. Intriguingly, this swim bladder is divided into two parts, with the right-handed portion being notably large.
